Andrea Dovizioso to join Cal Crutchlow at Tech 3 Yamaha

Andrea Dovizioso has signed a one-year contract to ride for the Tech 3 Yamaha MotoGP team in 2012.

The 25-year-old is currently third in the championship standings but had already been told he would not be kept on by his Repsol Honda team.

The Italian will partner Cal Crutchlow next season with fellow Brit Bradley Smith set to join the team in 2013.

Dovizioso said: "I am excited to become part of the squad and to be teamed with Cal. This is a new challenge."

He added: "Now that 2012 is sorted, I want to focus on finishing the season in the best possible way."

Dovizioso will replace Colin Edwards and his signing leaves Crutchlow's longer-term future in MotoGP unclear.

The Coventry-born rider is contracted for 2012 but with Smith tied up for 2013, only one spot in the team will be available after next season.

Tech 3 team manager Herve Poncharal said: "Andrea is without doubt one of the fastest riders in the world who has proven on a regular basis that he is capable of challenging for the podium in MotoGP.

"I am convinced that with Andrea and Cal we have one of the strongest line-ups on the grid in 2012 and both of them will demonstrate the potential of Yamaha's new 1000cc machine."

Yamaha World Superbike Team unveil 2011 livery

The 2011 Yamaha World Superbike Team has unveiled the livery they will run for the upcoming World Superbike season. The new design features a Yamaha blue corporate racing colour scheme. The livery takes its inspiration from both the famous Yamaha speed block design and also one of the colours of the current production model YZF-R1, giving the bike a modern sleek appearance whilst emphasizing Yamaha’s racing image.

The team features an all new rider line up for the 2011 championship with 28yr old Italian rider Marco Melandri, a previous 250cc World Champion, stepping across from MotoGP to partner 24yr old rider Eugene Laverty from Northern Ireland who steps up from the World Supersport Championship. The new livery will feature prominently on the leathers of both riders.

The team continues its winter testing schedule on the 21st and 22nd February at the Phillip Island circuit in advance of the opening round of the championship in Australia on 27th February.

Yamaha is pleased to announce that it will unveil the final livery of its 2011 YZR-M1 on 21st February at 6pm at Sepang, Malaysia, the day before the start of the MotoGP test session.

2010 SPEED Performance Award

The 2010 MotoGP season saw one of the most impressive rookie performances in series history when Parts Europe-supported Ben Spies lined up aboard his privateer Yamaha.

The Texan had already earned numerous championships worldwide and proved his MotoGP talent was a force to be reckoned with.

Spies had earned multiple podium finishes, the pole position in Indianapolis and MotoGP rookie of the year honors as he finished the series sixth overall.

Spies will now make the move to the Factory Yamaha squad for 2011, replacing Valentino Rossi, and will no doubt be a title contender.

To cap off this amazing MotoGP season, Spies has been nominated for another Rookie of the Year award for the SPEED Performance Awards. He is up against four other rookies from various motorsports disciplines and can use your help to pull off the win.

Voting for the awards will close at midnight on Monday, Dec. 13, 2010. The winner will be announced during a one-hour SPEED television special in February. To view Spies' highlight video and to cast your vote, click here.

First factory Test a success for Spies

The American concluded the two days at Valencia with the third fastest time overall as he put his 2011 M1 through its initial paces.

Ben Spies wrapped up the second and final day of the Official MotoGP Test at Valencia early on Wednesday having gained plenty of positive feedback on his 2011 Yamaha M1. The American, Testing as a factory rider for the first time, put in 49 laps before 1pm and is already looking forward to further developing the bike in Malaysia in February.

"We've had another good day and another day of learning,” he said. “We messed with the bike a bit, changed some settings and went in a positive direction. So another good session working with the new crew again, I'm very happy with it.”

Spies added: “I read some comments from Jorge about the new engine for next year, he seemed to be happy with the way that was going so I look forward to seeing that in Malaysia. I'm looking forward to now having a couple of months of then getting back to it!"

Spies’ Crew Chief Tom Houseworth, who has made the switch from the Tech 3 team with the rider, commented: "We tested the prototype again this morning, we collected the data from yesterday and following a meeting last night made some setting changes for today which we tested with very positive results. Once we had achieved these we went ahead and tested the Bridgestone tyres, testing three options, one of which Ben really liked a lot.”

“The test has been very productive and very promising for the future on the new bike. Ben is really optimistic and looking forward to continuing at Sepang."
